The number of unemployed in Spain unexpectedly increased last month

The latest figures from the Ministry of Employment showed that in January the number of unemployed rose by 60,404 people, to 2,767,860 people. However, this is the lowest value for the month of January since 2008. On an annual basis, the number of unemployed decreased by 140,537 people or by 4.83%.

Compared to December, the number of unemployed decreased in the construction sector (-1,234 people or -0.58%). However, the number of unemployed increased in the service sector (+58,721 people or +3.03%), in agriculture (+1,256 people or +1.28%), in the industrial sector (+440 people or +0.20%) and among people without previous employment (+1,221 people or +0.5%).

Unemployment among women increased by 41,904 or 2.59%, to 1,658,887, while unemployment among men increased by 18,500 or 1.70%, to 1,108,983. Unemployment among youth under the age of 25 increased by 7,189 people or 3.71% compared to December, to 201,154 people.

Spain's economy was one of the most resilient in the eurozone in 2023, amid growing tourism and a stable labor market (in the 4th quarter of 2023, the unemployment rate fell to its lowest level since 2007, amounting to 11.76%).
