U.S. consumer inflation expectations remain unchanged at 3.0 per cent in March

The New York Fed announced on Monday that the U.S. consumer inflation expectations for the year ahead remained unchanged at 3.0 per cent in March compared to February. Overall, this was the third straight month the inflation expectations made no change.

According to the report, the anticipations about year-ahead price change for gas and food increased by 0.2 percentage point to 4.5 per cent and 5.1 per cent, respectively. At the same time, expectations for year-ahead changes in the cost of a college education jumped by 0.7 percentage point to 6.5 per cent, while the perceptions of year-ahead changes in the cost of medical care climbed by 1.3 percentage points to 8.1 per cent, and those for the cost of rent surged 2.6 percentage points to 8.7 per cent. Elsewhere, home price growth expectations held steady for the sixth straight month at 3.0 per cent. 

The three-year-ahead inflation expectations increased to 2.9 per cent in March from 2.7 per cent in February, while the five-year-ahead inflation expectations declined to 2.6 per cent from 2.9 per cent in the previous month.
