Canada’s wholesale sales decline less than anticipated in November

Statistics Canada informed on Wednesday that wholesale sales (excluding petroleum and oilseed and grain) declined 0.2 per cent m-o-m to CAD83.75 billion in November 2024, following an unrevised 1.0 per cent m-o-m climb in October 2024. That marked the first monthly decrease in wholesale sales in three months.

Economists had forecast a 0.7 per cent m-o-m drop for November.

According to the report, the November fall in wholesale sales reflected declines in sales of motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and accessories (-5.5 per cent m-o-m) and personal and household goods (-0.4 per cent m-o-m) that more than offset advances in the remaining five other subsectors.

In y-o-y terms, wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain) increased 0.6 per cent in November.
