Passenger car registrations in the European Union rose sharply at the beginning of the year

Data published by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) showed that in January, the number of registrations of new passenger cars in the European Union rose by 12.1% per year, to 851,690 units, after falling by 3.3% per year in December.

The data also showed that the number of registrations of new passenger cars in Germany increased by 19.1% per annum. A significant increase was also recorded in Italy (+10.6% per annum), France (+9.2% per annum), and Spain (+7.3% per annum).

ACEA said that in January, the battery-electric car market share rose to 10.9% from 9.5% in January 2023. Overall, new battery-electric car sales surged by 28.9% to 92,741 units. Hybrid-electric cars commanded a share of nearly 30%, solidifying their position as the second most preferred choice among EU car buyers. New registrations of hybrid-electric cars increased by 23.5%, to 245,068 units. The combined market share of petrol and diesel cars totaled almost 50% compared to 54% in January 2023. The petrol car market expanded by 4%, to 299,914 units, while the diesel car market contracted by 4.9%, to 114,415 units.
